Automotive Lead Acid Battery Market trends by 2021

From 2016 to 2021, the global automotive lead acid batteries market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.8 percent, from USD 34.30 billion in 2015 to USD 45.03 billion in 2021. Due to increased demand for SLI (start lighting and ignition) batteries from the OEM and replacement markets in the automobile industry, the market is likely to rise in the future years.

The market for automotive lead-acid batteries is being driven by rising worldwide automobile sales and the replacement market for used batteries. By 2021, the automotive lead acid battery industry is anticipated to be worth over USD 45 billion.

The performance of the automotive industry is closely tied to the performance of the automotive lead-acid battery market, thus if the automotive industry is growing, the automotive lead-acid battery market will increase as well, and vice versa. The automotive industry in the Asia-Pacific region has seen rapid growth in recent years. The Asia-Pacific area has reported surge in the overall passenger car sales. Leading automotive lead-acid battery manufacturing companies includes Johnson Controls, Exide Technologies, EnerSys, and GS Yuasa among others. The strong replacement demand from customers with relatively high disposable incomes, as well as the big affluent expatriate population, are the primary factors driving the market in the Asia-Pacific region.

The market is being held back by rising demand for lithium-ion batteries and the risk of battery explosion due to overcharging.

Because of the increased demand for electricity storage, the market for lithium-ion batteries is likely to rise significantly in the near future. Because of their light weight and compact size, these batteries are among the most competitive in the battery energy storage marketIn addition, unlike lead-acid and sodium-sulfur batteries, which employ aqueous electrolytes, lithium-ion batteries use non-aqueous electrolytes that provide higher operating voltages.

There have been several reports of lead-acid battery explosions all around the world. Explosions have been documented in mines and quarries, as well as stationary and mobile plants and vehicles.

Various types of automotive lead-acid battery

Flooded Batteries

Flooded batteries, also known as vented batteries, must be monitored on a regular basis and topped up with distilled water to ensure their longevity. OEMs and aftermarket customers both benefit from flooded batteries in automotive applications. In terms of cost, these batteries are less expensive than VRLA batteries. Traction, UPS, and marine applications all benefit from flooded batteries.

Enhanced Flooded Batteries

Enhanced flooded batteries, often known as maintenance-free batteries, have a sealed shell. In terms of battery technology, these are more advanced versions of flooded batteries. Enhanced flooded batteries are developed to suit the automotive industry's requirement by providing a cost-effective alternative for entry-level and traditional start-stop automobiles. These batteries are usually used in micro-hybrid vehicles and are ideal for start-stop application.

Valve Regulated Lead-Acid Batteries

Maintenance-free batteries are also known as valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries. They accept more charge, allowing the batteries to charge more quickly. VRLA AGM and VRLA Gel batteries are two types of VRLA batteries. The electrolyte is absorbed into a mat of fine glass fibre in a VRLA AGM battery.VRLA AGM batteries have a longer life span and are more resistant to adverse weather conditions. The VRLA Gel battery is made up of silica gel and electrolyte. Emergency lighting, UPS, and wheelchairs all use VRLA Gel batteries.
